CHOOSING YOUR HEDGING
A hedge can be much more than a row of plants in a line. A hedge can give your garden added benefits, providing security and privacy, shelter from wind or dust and act as a screen to obscure an unattractive view. Hedging can be leafy green, have an array of coloured foliage, flowers, berries or fruit.
When choosing the plants for your hedge, take into consideration the site, climate, soil type, the height and width you want your hedge to grow up too and the growth rate of the plants. We have a great variety of hedging and shelter belt stock for sale and we are able to offer instore advice to help you with your purchase.
PLANTING YOUR HEDGE
Once you have decided on the type of hedging you would like, it is time to begin your planting. A peg and a string guideline will ensure you have a straight row if you are planting a formal hedge.Prepare the ground and soil, by digging in good quality compost to your existing soil, or plant directly into a top quality Garden Mix. We use Living Earth Compost and Living Earth Garden Mix with great results.
For best results when planting, dig a hole in the ground at least twice the width and depth of your root ball and soak the roots of the plant in a seaweed water mix, just before planting. This tonic encourages root growth and includes minerals, vitamins and alginates for healthy plant growth.

MAINTAINING YOUR EXISTING HEDGE
There are not too many things more satisfying than looking out at a dense and fabulous looking hedge on your property. To create a formal hedge, start with a dwarf hedge and gradually build the height and width. Regular pruning will encourage a nice bushy dense hedge, depending on the species you have selected. Use garden lines tightly stretched between stakes as a template. Ensure the hedge tapers slightly towards the top, so that optimum light reaches the lower parts of the hedge.
Due to the close proximity and the height growth, regular feeding in Spring and Autumn is needed to support the plants growth and in the Summer months, top up with our “Living Earth Mulch” not too close to their stems, to maintain the moisture.
